Before at least USMDs could safely match anesthesiology, radiology, general surgery (to a lesser extent). Seems like that’s changing. Maybe anesthesia was easy to get in, but Surgery and radiology have been pretty competitive the past few years. Surgery match rates for USMDs have always hovered in the low-mid 80s.

In general, call at WashU averages 1x/week. Avg 2 weekend days per month, usually on different weekends. General OR avg probably 60-65hrs/wk. Relationship with the surgery department on a day to day basis is fine. As far as Anesthesiology vs. EM, I would say EM has better "lifestyle" b/c they work less hours (probably an average of 35 vs. an average of 50 or so) and they are never on call (barring mass casualty or you have to cover for a sick co-worker). NO CALL for EM. and you only work like half the month for full time pay.
