The crag, though only one point, desires at least half a day of your attention between travel and sight-seeing. Directions: Located near Ponca, just over an hour from Fayetteville, head East on Hwy 45 (20 mi.), then East on 412 (20 mi.). A portion of the hike is on the Appalachian Trail where you’ll enjoy some mountain views and friendly thru-hikers along the way. You can shorten the hike by taking the Upper Hawksbill Trail instead. It is 2.1 miles roundtrip, gains about ~500 feet of elevation; however, it isn’t very scenic until you reach the summit.Hike to the iconic Hawk’s Bill Crag. The Whitaker Point Trail, often called the Hawksbill Crag Trail, is a 3-mile round trip through lush forest, passing waterfalls and large boulders. Beautiful views await, but note some sections of the trail are cliff-hugging, and you must take caution at the top. Not recommended for young children..
